Sorrow is a necessary part of life. Sorrow, in the Lord's hands, is not sinful.
Like one who takes away a garment in cold weather, and like vinegar on soda, is one who sings songs to a heavy heart. Proverbs 25:20
It's OK to be sorrowful because sorrow brings us to God. If you seek Him in your sorrow, you will be comforted. If you seek other things you will learn to depend on them. God blesses the unhappy. He wants to lift them out, and He will, into firm and solid happiness, not a momentary lifting or distraction.
In your sadness, cling to Him and pour out your heart. Ask Him to restore your happiness and the fortunes of your life.
God does not want us to suffer, but if suffering comes, embrace it and bring it to Him. He will lift you out, in time. Let Him in the moment be your comfort and seek nothing but Him and His guidance. He understands and He wants you to be happy - not according to your circumstances, but in all things.
Then you will know how to comfort the sad and weep with those who weep. You will pass on God's comfort to them, if you let Him comfort you.
